The Tag pictured above was originally issued to a New Zealander John Bardsley Service number 1394.
John lived in Dunedin NZ on enlistment and was a driver in the NZASC (Supply column).
He was interred at Stalag 8b which later became Stalag 344.
Interestingly the tag ended up in the possession of a Leutnant Dilcher who was a German paratrooper officer who took part in the Battle of Crete, how he came to have it is unknown.
Most NZ servicemen captured on Crete seem to have a POW number in the 5000’s
These tags are mostly in family collections with some being released onto the market which are kept in personal collections.
